SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating, which is the amount of cooling the air conditioner and heat pump emits, divided by the amount of energy (watts per hour) in uses.
Cooling / Watt per Hour = SEER
The higher the rating the better the efficiency. So, if your rating is 13.4 and up, your unit is up to date and in good working condition. If your unit is under 13.4 then your unit needs to be serviced and possibly replaced.
Variable speed relates to the type of compressor you have in your air conditioner or heat pump. This effects the capacity at which your unit will run. Variable speed allows your unit to run at a variety of speeds from 30% to 100%, this saves energy, removes moisture and maintains comfort.
Constant torque is when your unit maintains the same amount of power and torque while running. This is true no matter the static pressure or speed at which your unit is running. For example, if your unit is running at a higher speed the torque will stay the same regardless and vice versa if your unit is running low. So, with constant torque your unit is running at a higher octave than that of a variable speed unit. Variable speed runs consistently between 30% and 120%, while constant torque runs consistently at 150%.
To maintain your unit, it is important to change your filter monthly. Additionally, it's also important to clean your outdoor unit of debris, dirt and dust. See our Maintenance page for more information.
To decrease the amount of electricity your unit uses, be sure to make sure your unit is up to date. Many older units are not as efficient or cost effective as some of the newer units. Just like everything HVAC technology is constantly improving. So, it's important to stay up to date on how you can improve your HVAC system and save money!
